![]() That is why I think young adult stories will always be in fashion in one form or another. In a sense, we are always coming of age, no matter how old we are. Young adult books focus on the coming-of-age narrative and that is something everyone who has been a teenager relates to. ![]() Why do you feel young adult books are so popular and have such a voice right now? Both characters are different versions of myself. Will is more like the person I am now-cynical, negative, and probably far less woke than she thinks she is. When I think about the two main characters in the book, I see Harriet as a representation of the type of annoying person I was in high school-naive, ridiculously optimistic, and completely unaware of my own privilege. Which character do you most relate to and why? ![]() Those concerns were becoming central to the cultural conversation as well, and we’ve since seen them culminate in the #MeToo Movement. ![]() As I began writing the story, I realized it was developing into an exploration of power and privilege. Amelia was the best thing about high school as far as I’m concerned, and I thought it would be fun to revisit that experience in fiction. We invented an imaginary student called Amelia Westlake. Aurora: What was your inspiration behind Amelia Westlake Was Never Here?Įrin: The idea came from a hoax I did with two of my school friends when we were in our final school year. ![]() ![]() ![]() For Unamuno, art was a way of expressing spiritual problems. His most famous novel was Abel Sanchez: The History of a Passion (1917), a modern exploration of the Cain and Abel story. ![]() ![]() His best known, and most important, philosophical essay was The Tragic Sense of Life (1913). Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (1864 – 1936) was a Spanish essayist, novelist, poet, playwright and philosopher. (They trouble me too.) Little did I know what treasures awaited me in discovering the work of this early twentieth century thinker. It seemed odd to me that Houston would mention a philosopher who more than dabbled in some ideologies that would trouble most American conservatives. The course was one on spiritual formation. I was driving my car to speak in Iowa in the summer of about 1998 and the esteemed founding president of Regent College (Vancouver), James Houston, mentioned the importance of this Spanish philosopher for deeper insight into the faith. I remember when I first heard the Spaniard’s name – Miguel de Unamuno. ![]() ![]() ![]() There should be a warning for parents of kids who do not want the idea of Santa being questioned. If this book were a movie would you go see it? Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Judy Blume? I will be sure to read reviews of Judy Blume books before having my kids read them to ensure there are no inappropriate topics. I was very surprised having the topic of Santa in this book. Has Superfudge turned you off from other books in this genre? I never thought Judy Blume would be the one to open my kids to the idea that Santa is not real. Vours hatching some plot so they can be powerful during the summer solstice, when they’re least powerful? Tracers, who kill Vours and anyone touched by Vours? This weird world the Vours live in that is a world but also isn’t? (Which I have read and, at the time of reading this, had no memory of.)Īs I said, I enjoyed the characters and I wanted to see everything turn out okay for them, but I wasn’t impressed by these things being introduced to it. It felt obvious that Holt was keeping his end game in mind rather than it organically happening and making me go “Oh!” when I read the third book in the series. It felt like it was less about character development and getting me to care about the story - which I did in The Devouring because who doesn’t love an older sister teaching her brother to save himself? - than about hitting the next plot points so the stepping stone was in place for book three.Īnd, while that’s fine and dandy, it didn’t feel as well woven into the story.
